Elvis Presley, cuyo nombre completo era Elvis Aaron Presley, nació el 8 de enero de 1935 en Tupelo, una pequeña ciudad del estado de Mississipi, aunque la familia se traslada a Memphis en 1948 para mejorar su situación económica.Desde muy niño Elvis comenzó a demostrar su pasión por el beisbol y, sobre todo, por la música. Le gustaba todo tipo de música. Esa pasión por la música contrastaba con sus malas notas en el colegio y su desinterés por los libros.Cuando terminó los estudios comenzó a trabajar en una empresa de electricidad. En 1953 grabó un sencillo disco para regalar a su madre. El propietario del estudio donde lo grabó se fijó en quel muchacho y decidió echarle una mano.En 1954, junto al guitarrista Scotty Moore y el bajo Bill Black, graban una maqueta con dos canciones. Fue suficiente para que Elvis decidiera que su futuro estaba en la música. A partir de ese momento graban varios discos más y se dedican a hacer actuaciones en directo en pequeños locales. La fuerza de las interpretaciones de Elvis suponen un gran éxito entre las veinteañeras de la ciudad.En 1955 el mánager Tom Parker le ofreció a Elvis sus servicios como representante artístico. Elvis aceptó y se pusieron a trabajar juntos. Ese mismo año, Parker consiguió para el cantante un contrato con la RCA que incluía su lanzamiento a nivel nacional.En 1956 Elvis acude a Nashville, capital del country, para trabajar y aprender de los mejores músicos del momento. De allí nació su primer número uno, 'Heartbreak Hotel. Ese mismo año rueda su primera película para el cine, 'Love me tender'.Elvis fue influido por las baladas populares y la música country de su época, así como por lo que escuchaba en la iglesia y en las reuniones evangélicas que frecuentaba en su juventud. También jugó un papel importante en su formación el rhythm and blues que solía escuchar en la histórica calle Beale de Memphis cuando era adolescente. El sonido creado por Elvis justo antes de irrumpir en el mundo musical a gran escala, fue realmente revolucionario. En sus primeras presentaciones, Elvis agregó elementos de rhythm and blues a la música country y viceversa, combinando así géneros musicales que hasta entonces habían permanecido separados. Para entonces ya está considerado como el Rey del Rock & Roll. En la década de los sesenta interpreta infinidad de películas, la mayoría sin mucha calidad, aparte de la sola presencia del mito. Mientras tanto, su vida anda por las nubes. Se construye un enorme palacio en Memphis llamado 'Graceland' y se casa con Priscilla Beaulie, con quien tuvo su primera hija, Lisa Marie. Su fama va decayendo poco a poco.Por sorpresa, en 1968, Elvis reaparece en televisión y nuevamente es relanzado hacia la cima. Retorna a los escenarios para ofrecer conciertos y actúa en Las Vegas.A pesar de todo, sus últimos años fueron un tanto grises. Su salud se deteriora y el abuso de las drogas y medicamentos hacen mella en él. Su obesidad y su imagen resulta triste para sus fans, que desearían verle como antes.Finalmente, el 16 de agosto de 1977, Elvis fallecía en Graceland, siendo enterrado en el jardín de la casa.
