ELVIS Y LAS ARTES MARCIALES
..........................
ELVIS AND THE MARTIAL ARTS
......................
............................
We begin assuming that to know who is Elvis and that to know something on its matchless race in music (and the films, and TV), including the events without precedents that culminated when it ended up dominating to the lists of musical successes and culture MGP from its first success of national fame in 1956 to its enlistment in the army in 1958, after filming King Creole and while it was still in the top of its early race. More we are interested in which it happened later. In March of 1958 Elvis it joined the army of the United States and went to Fort Hood (near Waco, Texas) to train with a armed division. There see a demonstration of Judo or Jujitsu but is no registry of which it had followed a formal training in martial arts until 1959, when it was destined Germany. His first instructor was Juergen Seydal, a Shotokan artist. Supposedly, Elvis also trained with Vietnamese teachers while it was of permission in Paris. Being on Germany, Elvis pawned great amount of time practicing its new passion. Unlike other likings in which it was implied deeply and that soon it left equal of steeply, it was become attached to the martial arts for the rest of his life (other 19 years). It trained with Hank Slemansky, a Shito-Ryu artist whom also she trained to Give Inosanto and obtained the black belt when she returned to the United States in 1960. In an album of gospel published the following year and His titleholder hand in mines, Elvis appears to the piano taking a clasp of black belt in the lapel. Hank Slemansky later died in action a few years in Vietnam.
..............................
.................................
Elvis helped to teach to Karate to the members of his " Mafia of Menfis" , the good-old-boys and friendly that around maintained to his like bodyguard and companions of training. Some of them had other functions and they really worked, but the majority was parasites that took advantage the fame and the generosity of Elvis. Later it used to bodyguard and new members of the Mafia of Menfis being based in which they had experience in martial arts. Some of them the Parkers and other stars of the martial arts were recommended by Ed. Advancing us until 1974 for a moment -01/09/1974 to be exact, during one long one char it in study that Elvis gave on the martial arts Elvis he remembers how that one night when breaking bricks before a concert and then speech had dislocated its hand about a similar accident while it recorded G.I. Blues in 1960 (the first film after its return of the army). It had used much of his time it enters takings breaking tables, bricks and roofing tiles - a species of demonstration for the running equipment and apparently blocked bad a kick which caused that its hand was swollen and bleached in santiamén. The maquillaje people did what could and Elvis left to scene with the main actress and a guitar with one " great and heavy hand that seemed as if otro" belonged to some;. It indicated that if sights to the back cover of album G.I. Blues you can see him tearing the guitar (ay) with its injured hand. You also can.
..............................
Echad un vistazo a: "G.I. Blues , Wild in the country , Blue Hawaii , Follow that dream , Kid Galahad , Roustabout , Harum scarum y Double trouble , por ejemplo. :- 0
...............................
More ahead in 1960 Elvis it attended a demonstration in the Hotel Beverly Wilshire given by Ed Parker and was so made an impression that " spoke later with Parker saying to him; it seems that you are a rebel in your field, as I am it in my". It was very impressed by the innovating methods that Parker unfolded and the flowed movements of Kenpo. Later Ed Parker said that Elvis was studying a very rigid system and it liked the flexibility of the Kenpo. They became friendly and Parker taught from time to time to Elvis during the rest of the life of Elvis. If we observed its style, is apparent that the Kenpo of the IKKA was its main influence in terms of applications on the martial arts. Ed Parker affirmed that Elvis was a good black belt and sometimes it shamed to him knowing the manual of the best IKKA than he himself. Elvis already could only be handled in a fight. In 1956 it fought against a jealous husband in Toledo and won (although it went in opinion, he was acquitted) and in the same year it demolished to an assistant of powerboat of 2 meters and his friend who got upset by the attention that was receiving in the servants (it went again in opinion and again he was acquitted). Elvis was a fast apprentice. According to him, it secured the second degree in 1963, skipped the third degree and it at some time obtained the quarter of years 60, fifth on 1971, sixth at the beginning of 1973 and the eighth in August of 1974 (Ed Parker insisted in which one was a degree honorary). Elvis said to Ed Parker and to whom it listened to him to be conceited of martial arts that, if been it had not occupied in the world of the spectacle, would have enchanted to dedicate themselves to him full-time to the martial arts, training and teaching. Just as it did with music of " Rhythm and Blues" , with something of more eclectic music country and with other influences that mixed in his first recordings, set out the martial arts to a pile of people giving them diffusion massive at a time in that relatively they were not known and Elvis he was one of the few black belts not-Asians. One of the ways in it did which it more indeed went incorporating it to its films that, inevitably, included fight scenes. In a few films the influence of Karate is particularly showy in this scenes. You throw a look a: " G.I. Blues, Wild in the country, Blue Hawaii, Follow that dream, Kid Galahad, Roustabout, Harum scarum and Double trouble, for example. During one of the scenes of fight in Flaming Star Elvis it broke the arm of Network West (bodyguard, writer of songs and actor that was one of the first members of the Mafia of Menfis). Also some type of chi of hardening must have practiced because the actress Millie Perkins broke her wrist when she slapped in Wild in the country to him. : - 0
.............................
.................................
Elvis could support the physical punishment of the fight. Apparently yes. I must repeat that somebody already has spoken on this and that was in great physical form most of its life. In fact, in 1973 it thinned for the emission by satellite of Aloha from Hawaii until the 75 kg (measuring 1,80 M.s), which was 9 kg less than what weighed when joined the army in 1958. Even towards the end, their physical problems were not as much of excess of weight as of a complete set of much more serious ailments (and, again, martial artists with phenomenally qualified excess of weight exist that way). One of the things less known Elvis is that it made a pile of his own scenes of risk in the films. In Flaming to star, for example, fell of a horse rampant without damages. In King Creole in 1958 Vic Morrow did a cut to him in the arm with a knife (later it died in the running of In the limits of the reality) that took several points to close. And, by all means, they are all the scenes of fight. If memory correctly, broke a finger in one of them. In Kid Galahad of ago boxer reason why it was trained by Mushy Callahan, which affirmed that to the experience in Karate de Elvis and its early necessity to defend itself - in its past in the highway before it became famous, when it did not have bodyguards who contained the jealous fianc2es or to patanes- they did a born fighter to him. I worked with somebody in hospital that knew a doctor who was presented/displayed to Elvis in the middle of the 70; it seems that Elvis began to speak with him of martial arts and next it said to him that it extended her hand with an object exceeds - I believe that it was a pistol, although sounds a little rare saying that it would take hold the object before the doctor could close his hand. The doctor thought " already, certainly you can! " and it was surprised very when Elvis obtained its trick, and more it repeated when it. So also it had fast hands. It is well for the hall tricks. It fought, but never he had the experience of matches that many consider the true seal of a competent martial artist (I not). Simply, it did not have time to dedicate itself as completely to the martial arts as it would have liked, although supposedly every day practiced several hours when it could or when it was being prepared for a tour. My idea is that Elvis was a martial artist competent and understood that it loved truly all the aspects of the art and that left its way to spread the word (sic) long before which It Bruce Lee could reach a position from which it could do the same. Even in a special one of 1968 TV that announced its exit of the trap of Hollywood, Elvis had one long sequence of martial arts that evolved in a martial dance choreography and done by other artists (it was cut in the spectacle - he is rare- enough but it is included in the tape that is sold nowadays).
............................
.............................
In 1969 it returns to the activities in direct and completely develops a style on scene due to its experience in martial arts. It is a species of hybrid between his first movements of when young and the controlled movements of Karate. Their activities include a pile of movements of hand and standing up removed from Kenpo and choreography with their music. Besides hits and other movements of arm, also it throws a pile of lateral and circular kicks and falls a slight (during the Suspicious song minds and Polk salad Annie) open of legs on one of them soon to change the other. Also it used of a pile of low positions, including one of low rider with whom got descended to accompany the decreasing note from his under soloist in the mixture by I to woman/Amen which it followed See see to rider during the past few years. Many of these movements continue until the aim of the life of Elvis, although it began to make less Karate in scene in the last year, more or less. In 1971 and 72 kata at the end of Suspicious adds to a long sequence style minds that was only made for support of the battery. Of I throw, teaches to Karate to its battery, its low guitarist of and some of the singers of the choir, so that they can also be anticipated better to the movements of Elvis and because very it was implied in that their friendly were interested in it. You can see something of this style in documentary of 1970 Elvis- That´s the way it is and documentary of 1972 Elvis on tour.
............................
.......................
In 1970 it began to train with Kang Rhee in Menfis - with which it gave 50,000 dollars to construct a new school him, as well as the obligatory Cadillac and the usual jewelry shop, guitars, etc. - that a school of Pasaryu (basically Taekwondo, I create) in Menfis had. It continued training with Ed Parker, to whom also gave a Cadillac - Elvis said " to him; this car is hindering in the entrance way you can to take by my? " - and piles of jewels and the layer and belt that assumed that he was going to take in the concert by satellite of Aloha - the one that to him an attack to its clothes designer produced since those things were worth thousand of dollars in material and jewels and it just a few occurred to Mr. Parker days them before the spectacle. Ed Parker accompanied more to Elvis in its tours - like a friend than like a paid bodyguard whenever it could during the 70 and it remained in the scene at the end of the spectacle to help to handle him to the multitude and to leave express enters frames towards the limosina. So it was captivated with the Kenpo that had the shield sewn in several of its jackets in 1970 and, from 1972 to the end of 1975, during the majority of his concerts, fixed a great emblem of the IKKA to his black guitars Gibson - a quite conspicuous gesture that did not happen unnoticed when the emission of Aloha reached a hearing of 1,5 trillions of potential kenpoístas. The unique rubbing that both they had never (shared the same initials and, of I throw, Elvis gave to Ed Parker jewels being based on that similarity) took place in 1973 with the championship of Karate of the state of California organized by Parker and who maintained itself in San Francisco. Elvis was interested so much in the championship that even sent to Mr. Rhee to Los Angeles to add itself to the expedition that it was leading there but, when it arrived at the place and vió a great one entoldado that " said; Elvis Presley in persona" he put themselves furious and he made again give the return to the group towards Los Angeles. To be right, it seems that promoter did it without to consult to Parker but to Elvis, who it took advantage much more people than of no other celebrity that can be happened to you, did not like to be used thus.
......................
...........................
During the 70 Elvis deepened in the not-physical side of the martial practice. Been it had put in yoga, meditation and a complete handful of philosophy and other things that were used to call " hidden" but that now considers " New Age" from mid the 60. But this immense letter would be duplicated of size if it began with this. In 1973 it supposedly leaves the physical training during one season, but soon it returns him. In 18 of February of 1973 it happens a famous incident: three men burst in into scene - he was that their intentions were quite suspicious and criminal and quickly are dispatched. Following a who you want to believe was Elvis, its bodyguards, their low guitarist or a combination of all together ones expelled who them. Everything what I can hear in the recording of the incident is a handful of shouts and to obvious excited Elvis saying " if you want to narrow my hand is a thing… but, if you want to put hard, I will kick the ass to you! ". In fact that remembers another history to me (releases we see it that it can get to be this letter) on when it was leading by the Sunset boulevard in Los Angeles and somebody in a powerboat saluted to him with the finger heart - if it knew that it was Elvis or no, that not self. Elvis restrained abruptly, backed down and entered the powerboat. It took a pistol, hides. It left, one went to the people group who was and said there to crude " you removed dedito to me, lad? " and the other " clear that yes". In one more a voice composed Elvis it said " to him; I watch, does not like that people speak así" to me; and with the last word the type made a movement but it arrived first and he struck to him twice in the head with a kick, falling down to him. Soon it returned to the car and it followed way. I cannot really assure the truth this history, sometimes although Elvis made outlandish things - but generally not of violent way-.
Nevertheless, history that is definitively truth is the one of which it dissolved a fight in a powerboat (with its love by the things with wheels, I imagine that it used long time in the powerboats) in Madison, in its last tour. Once again, their bodyguards became crazy when seeing that he exposed myself to a potentially violent situation, but he calmed the fight probably more by his mere presence that on the other thing. Elvis financed a pile of companies of martial arts, including the legendary Tennesse Karate Institute Co-founded with Network West with which Bill Wallace - to that Elvis and the Parkers tried to promote to 6º give… one long history was associate and to which Joe Lewis, Dominique Valera and others went to train. The same Elvis trained frequently in the TKI but, while the other were practicing full-contact and kickboxing, Elvis continued with the Kenpo " traditional" and the techniques of self-defense that seemed very impressive and ostentatious but that required in fact little contact. In 1973 Bill Wallace it received a kick in his left leg, the good one, and was out of play with a severe contusion of his gastrocnemius (pantorrilla). They did not serve months as regular medical attention, so Elvis made fly to a acupuncturist to Graceland from California and " Superpie" it was cured completely in 15 minutes, and continued remaining unconquered from 1974 to 1980. Bill Wallace recognizes that it was Elvis rescuer of its race and that also was he the one whom it presented the arts martial " … to a pile of people… who normally were not shortage. They paid attention to them due to whom were él". In 1974 it financed the tour of the equipment of Karate of the United States by Europe. It made make hastily in special Tokaido, Japan, kimonos in red, white and blue. Then a Tokaido of white color cost 35 dollars, but these probably ended up costing to him to 400 the piece. From similar way kimono that is seen Elvis taking in many photos (all comes from the same session when he was next to the 40 years), target with the flat edge of red, cost near 500 dollars, according to a source, and the belt was made of two belts of flat then normal sewings on the one hand, supposedly, thought that the normal belts were too narrow and so a fajin became.
...........................

Elvis almost was obsessed with the idea to make a film of martial arts of high quality. In 1974 new began the recording of its project gladiators that was conceived by the student of Parker, George Waite, also next to Elvis. It carried out this it financed, it narrated and it. The intention of the film was to describe to the competitors of Karate and its training, finalizing in matches (were a few championships of program to cover in this documentary) by everybody. A fragment was rolled the 16 of September of 1974 with Elvis training and making exercises of chi and that is the source of near 40 minutes of film of Elvis in kimono (also there are photograms). A spying in the film of 1981 This is Elvis can be seen. The photos of that session are seen in the distance of the People magazine that celebrated the 40 anniversary of Elvis in January of 1975 and that they gave more fame him like defender of the Karate. The project never it did not realise, nor either other conceived by Ed Parker and Elvis who I believe that Billy Easter was calld. In this film, according to it seems, it would have interpreted an ex--agent of the company that directed a school of Karate when his friend is assassinated by dealers of drug and to which Elvis persecutes looking for revenge. This paper (without songs, something that hopelessly wanted to do) sounds similarity to near 8 million films that has seen the light since then.
The martial arts they even appeared in his divorce of Priscilla. Both knew Mike Stone while they were in Hawaii after his marriage (Stone was competing in a championship organized by Ed Parker that went the one who presented/displayed to him to the pair). Elvis was really made an impression by its ability fighting. A few years later Stone it returned to be with him in Fertile valleys, while of ago bodyguard of Phil Spector. After Spector left the frames, both raised his room of the attic - the complete floor, in reality and spoke of Karate. Priscilla had been learning Kenpo de Ed Parker and its students, soon Taekwondo of Mr. Rhee and soon continued with Chuck Norris. Stone used to visit the school of Norris to train with Priscilla and both they finished in a professor-student relation no longer only. In October of 1973 Priscilla and Elvis they divorced.

Before it finishes finally with this note, I must talk of its season in the Hilton International in Fertile valleys of 1974. By a thing: There Elvis had a spectacular monkey with a designed Chinese dragoon during its last pair of days that was a tribute to the martial arts and, probably, its more colorful dress. Also it had an excellent monkey of tiger, perhaps his dress more fantastic than it reflected the name that Kang Rhee had given him, " Tiger". In any case, it had like part of its repertoire its new If song you talk in your sleep, between funky and soul, with which it executed fragments of movements of Kenpo. As the season progressed (it made two spectacles per night) the song began to extend itself since it began to incorporate more Kenpo. It even ended up making combinations longer - it wore to his jacket of kimono and its belt over his monkey for the single ones of battery that interrupted the song. I have seen some of these demonstrations and the speed of its movements is impressive. By all means that are a pile of fabulous positions and poses of effect, but it is quite precise. If I knew more on Kenpo, probably she would find that some of them were technical of Kenpo without modifying. It was by the time of these concerts when 8º received his give. After singing If you talk in your sleep, Elvis was sent in a really long monologue on martial arts, their own commitment, how it is a philosophy and a way of life more than a way to strike people and how practically anyone can practice it, of a form or another one. Char them they were in fact quite interesting and only Elvis could leave with hers when interrupting a song during as much time to be excited with which the hearing probably was not hoping. It seems that he was really immersed in the then Kenpo (his recordings training were taken two weeks after spectacles of Fertile valleys). The night after its last spectacle attended a concert of Tom Jones in Fertile valleys, it was presented/displayed to him and it raised scene to give a demonstration of 20 minutes of Karate. , He is, everything here well what I can remember of Elvis like martial artist. There is much than ever we will be able to know, but the final message is that Elvis was a SERIOUS martial artist (like opposed fan) who was one of the relatively few in having a high graduation in this country at the beginning of the 60, that was dedicated to it during long time and that delivered all the attacks possible (to which all-powerful Colonel Parker was against) to spread the Karate between the public generally. Recognition is deserved at least for that reason and is therefore by which the question of Elvis like karateka (that continues appearing in the forum of the martial arts) probably would have to be Frequent question even although it did not approach at least Brushes Leein technique nor in innovation. But… you have heard sing sometimes to Bruce?.
BILL WALLACE ABOUT ELVIS
" It was quite good for his age and, for the amount of time that it had to spend it in training, it was extremely good. It was 40 years old when I began to work with él". ED PARKER, who wrote a whole book on Elvis and used to attend the encounter of their club of fans, as well as to the seminaries of Kenpo: " Elvis was darned a good black belt… according to any standard. It had nutgalls and the pain did not worry to him. If it received a blow while we were working it took, it like a man.
In fact, if you struck to him, he returned direct to by you. It was hard and it had a pile of anger".
